Netflix ruined it: The way of the househusband
This is my review for netflix's original anime series, the way of the house husband. Let me know in the comments below why you are excited for this and if not, why not?
Let's jump into the review. A retired gangster spends his time as a househusband, carrying out home chores. When i saw the trailer for this i was kind of really eagerly anticipating this as one of those anime that you know you keep on your radar, you mark the date on the calendar and you're like i'm so looking forward to that one. There's something that seemed like a really unique premise to me and I thought yeah I'm gonna go for it. I saw a few of the comments and they were kind of negative from the trailer and I thought this is just a kind of teaser trailer. It's not gonna be like that. I was so looking forward to this and so it's unfortunate that I have to say that they're opposite ends of the scale when it comes to this anime.
One the premise is unique and it's fantastic. The dialogue, the story are quite funny. It's a comedy in its own way. When you see this yakuza guy with a gruff voice, the voice work is excellent, very deep. His mere presence just as he walks down the street screams yakuza boss and when you start finding out about the history of him, you can understand why people just don't believe that he's given up his job or his life as a yakuza. um in the yakuza, the boss, the headhunters, the enforcer that they know him as and now he… uh is a househusband and he's trying to be the best house husband he can be. He wants to be the best cook, the best cleaner. He makes everything, it's like he's taken His whole old life and transposed that into his cleaning and so everything seems epic in nature. Every kind of movement has a sound effect that goes and that part is a lot of fun.
However on the other scale and the more important scale is the animation and to call it animation that is almost a lie. It's barely animated. You have a lot of still frames that are moved up and down. panning left and right you have those exclamation marks. All those effects with just lines that come out to the left or right hand side or you know shaking the filter or slightly moving.. uh the characters or having the character's mouse move when they're walking. Having the sound effect for walking but not actually having the characters walk it's like it's been taken instead from instead of a manga taken from a webtoon and they've just done it like a storyboard and it feels like a glorified storyboard and that's the animation that there is it feels like you're kind of watching something that is unfinished. it's a style that they've gone for and now i'm not sure it's paying off. however i stuck throughout it because i really like the characters i love the premise there's also funny moments that continue throughout the series. So like he has this cat and you see this adventures of this cat randomly at the end of uh most of the episodes not all of them but some of them and this character's cat just kind of goes on adventures and you see what happens with the scout. It's random but it kind of works. It fits into the craziness of the series. It also reminds me a little bit of one punch man. one punch man gets this psychicum who he doesn't really choose decides that he wants to learn how to be the strongest. you have the same sort of thing here someone if he's he's older generation or his youngsters that used to be a part of like his group. he's yakuza group has decided to be a student of the life he now lives because he feels like he's two side of the same coin so this definitely feels like it's pulling from certain genres and you can kind of reminisce going. I wish it was kind of that but for the most part it's a comedy moving graphic novel that you're seeing on your screen.
I guess it's a moving manga novel that's been colorized and the dialogue is funny and it is great and you do wonder what's going to happen. You do get to find out a little bit more in each episode about what's going on or what has happened with his past. you know him, everybody knows him as this massive enforcer. the guy that killed all the gangs before he put a stop to it. it's that he has this big history, this dark past and yet he's the serious guy that just wants to befriend his neighbors. He just wants to be the best husband. it also feels a little bit like food wars because a lot of the time he's making these exotic meals or desserts or whatever he's making, uh when it comes to food preparation or dessert is like extreme and you know you see moving really fast you have those sound effects going and then people taste it and they look like they're hard to orgasm on their face because these foods so amazing and so it reminded me a little bit of food wars. if you've seen food wars it's like a slice of life from an ex-gangster story line. I just wanted there to be actual animation, actual movements in the story. This is not really an animation adaptation. it's more like a storyboard for a manga that they've voiced and gone “hey this would be like a perfect thing to pitch to someone for a studio”. If you do actually want to see a live action version there is a live action version and it's very close to this almost exactly. It's a lot slower in pacing but it's pretty similar to the manga and this storyline so I'm sure you can find it. i found the first i just did a simple google search i found the first episode on there you can watch it um and so well whether you have a vpn or not so i liked it and i would love to give it a like a high score if it had a good animation i'd probably give it an A because i think it's a really unique different type of story and i think manga lovers of the story will know what i'm talking about. if you've read it but i can't give it a high mark because it doesn't have a lot of animation. It doesn't feel like an anime. It also reminds me a little bit of scissor 7, in that quirky weird wacky way. I'm gonna give it a C but that's just because of the story. the quirkiness like the kind of gimmicks that it works that way but it doesn't work when it comes to the animation. So let me know in the comments below: were you excited for this, have you seen the trailer or are you disappointed because it's done that or are you going to be fine with that? let me know once you've seen it what you think of it
